An EU-funded project, Lynceus, is designing low-power wireless location and tracking technologies for smooth large-passenger ship evacuation. The new technological solution, still in the making, is expected to monitor, in real time, all passengers and crew members on board a ferry or cruise ship in distress.'We have developed innovative wireless tags, which can be embedded into life jackets, so the location of people within the ship can be easily pinpointed,' says Tasos Kounoudes, from SignalGeneriX, one of the project partners.

Final results are expected to go beyond the state-of-the-art emergency management and safe evacuation systems. The project is supported with €2.5 million in EU research funds and is managed by the REA.
