A collision between a tanker and a bulker has resulted in an oil spill in the Parana River, Argentina.
The Italian-flagged products carrier Ghetty Bottiglieri (built 2002) and the Hong Kong-flagged Octbreeze Island (built 2011) were involved in a pretty significant collision on Saturday 13/12 near San Pedro, Argentina during a storm.
Octbreeze Island suffered a significant hull breach in the area of its fuel tanks causing a fuel spill, prompting the local authority to suspend upstream/downstream navigation. Navigation was restored in the early morning of Sunday, December 14. The damaged vessel received tugboat assistance and oil spill barriers were installed in a containment operation.
Additionally, Octbreeze Island had developed a list to starboard.
Port agency GAC said navigation was temporarily interrupted due to the fuel spill, but the river was opened again on Sunday morning.
“The damaged vessel received tugboat assistance and oil spill barriers were installed. Technical inspections of both vessels involved in the collision are being conducted,” it added.
