cunardLiverpool's economy could benefit by as much as £20m on the day of Cunard’s three Queens spectacular in May.

To mark the cruise liner company’s 175th birthday, three ships – Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria – will sail together up the River Mersey from Crosby as far as Tranmere. The choreographed event is expected to draw crowds to Liverpool’s waterfront on the scale of last year’s return of the Giants to the city’s streets, and that could mean a bonanza for city centre leisure and retail businesses.

A spokesman for Liverpool City Council told us that the preliminary analysis of the event in May shows that between £10m and £20m could be generated for the city centre economy. “That figure will depend on factors such as the weather,” he added. The three ships will arrive in the Mersey at different times over the late May bank holiday weekend, as part of special anniversary voyages and will be carrying around 6,000 passengers from 28 countries between them.
