CybersecurityguidelinesBIMCO, together with other leading shipping organisations, has today launched a set of guidelines to help the global shipping industry prevent major safety, environmental and commercial issues that could result from a cyber incident onboard a ship.

The cyber guidelines launched today are a first for the shipping industry, developed by international shipping associations, comprising BIMCO, CLIA, ICS, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO - and with support from a wide range of stakeholders. Angus Frew, Secretary General of BIMCO, said, “BIMCO has led the way to identify potential cyber vulnerabilities for ships – and their implications – based on the latest expert research.

“The aim is to provide the shipping industry with clear and comprehensive information on cyber security risks to ships enabling shipowners to take measures to protect against attacks and to deal with the eventuality of cyber incidents.

In assisting Maritime Companies to address and mitigate the Maritime Cyber Security Risks Aspida's Cyber Security division combines background and expertise both in Maritime and Risk Management, while being fully complied with BIMCO's guidelines.

Cyber Security has been a high priority of the global agenda in the past few years, as a top tier to national and transnational security. Emerging cyber threats including destructive malware, cybercrime and data leaks impact governments and corporations alike, urging organisations to develop and invest in cyber security in order to protect their valuable information and sensitive data. In contrast to other business threats, cyber attacks can remain undetected indefinitely which means you may already be under attack. Among the major points highlighted and a fundamental to reduce the potential of cyber threats is User Security Awareness.

Since the official launch of Aspida’s Cyber Security Division during BIMCO’s Annual Conference in Hamburg they offer a comprehensive portfolio of services to increase your cyber security level including an intensive single day course on User Security Awareness.

The course is addressed to corporate users and individuals in order to increase their Cyber Security Awareness and minimize the possibility of a cyber breach caused by human factors (errors, omissions etc). Users taking the course will be able to recognise threats, avoid attacks and make their daily use of IT safer and more secure.

Aspida's portfolio however extends to advanced security services under an Integrated Cyber Security Philosophy.

  1. Audits
  2. Vulnerability Assessments (VA)
  3. Penetration Testing (PT)
  4. Security Plans
  5. Emergency Response (incl. Restore, Forensics)
  6. Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and
  7. Vessel Security Information and Event Management (VSIEM)

  1. Very interesting piece of information. It signals that the importance of Cyber Security (and potentially Information Security - ISO 27001) is now starting to be recognized by significant Stakeholders in the Shipping & Maritime Industry!

Many professionals may exclaim: Given the ITC era we are living in, it was just about time!

It’s been argued that the reflexes of the shipping industry with regard to ISO management system standards are quite slow when comparing with other industries. ITC (Information Technology and Communication) related management system standards such as ISO 27001 (Information Security), ISO 22301 (Business Continuity) and ISO 31000 (Risk Management) are of increasing importance in many other industries - with the first one in particular (ISO 27001) being of great importance already. It may be the vastly changing legislative and regulatory framework that is draining the resources of the Shipping and Maritime Industry and makes it responsive to the mandatory management system standards only. However, the importance and value that the implementation of a management system standard such as ISO 27001 will bring to business, shall not be overtaken or ignored.

Information and Cyber Security is a challenge. We can definitely expect for more to come in the Shipping & Maritime Industry - even at the Legal and Regulatory level soon.
