New member joins CSSF at latest meeting in Dubai

14 out of 15 member companies of the Container Ship Safety Forum (CSSF) held the first of their biannual meetings in 2017 in Dubai, U.A.E. from 3rd to 4th May.

United Arab Shipping Company kindly hosted the meeting. As the latest new member, Taiwanese Wan Hai Lines Ltd. joined the CSSF directly after the meeting in Dubai, where they participated as observers. The CSSF now represents more than 40% of the TEU capacity of the global container ship fleet.

The meeting agenda focused on sharing best practices and experiences on safety of navigation, especially on the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) as primary means of navigation. Another important topic was the conduct of navigational audits. CSSF members also concluded the 2016 CSSF Performance Report. The CSSF’s Lost Time Injury Frequency (LTIF, as per OCIMF definitions) for 2016 was 1.15, a significant improvement compared to 1.38 in 2015. The performance report also includes data for the members’ performance during Port State Control (PSC) Inspections. The average number of deficiencies per PSC Inspection slightly raised to 1.10 in 2016 (1.08 in 2015) for the CSSF members’ vessels.

The classification society ABS supported the meeting with a lecture on their “Mariner Safety Research Initiatives”. Furthermore, elections for the Steering Committee of the CSSF took place during the meeting: Aslak Ross from Maersk Line and Christoph Werner from ship manager E.R. Schiffahrt were unanimously elected and will continue their work for the forum for a second term of three years.

Key tasks will be to push ahead with the 2016 approved CSSF strategy and the development of best practice guidelines for container ships The next members’ meeting of the forum is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong on 6 and 7 November 2017. The meeting will also be open for representatives from container shipping companies and container ship managers to participate as observers.
