(www.MaritimeCyprus.com) Working on a vessel can be extremely high-risk. Seafarers are reportedly up to 27.8 times more likely to suffer work related fatal injuries compared to the general shore based workforce.

A recent study has uncovered new insights into seafarers’ safety and wellbeing by examining the influence of organisational safety culture.

The study, conducted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the University of Queensland, and the University of Western Australia, surveyed 1026 seafarers, with 23 flag States being represented in the sample, reflecting the overall population of ships regularly coming into Australian ports. The report examined the causes and consequences of safety culture and the subsequent effects on seafarer well-being.

The sample was representative of the overall population of ships regularly coming into Australian ports. The key findings of this study were boiled down to these major groups:

  • Safety Culture
  • Work Demands - Working Hours
  • Fatigue and Sleep
  • Organisational Priorities
  • Mental Health
  • Well-being
  • Safety Behaviours
