UN Climate Change Annual Report 2018

(www.MaritimeCyprus.com) For many people across the world, climate change is already a matter of life and death. Yet we are still not doing enough to protect them. Nor are we doing enough to capitalize on the social, economic and environmental opportunities of climate action, which can enable economies and societies to thrive sustainably for decades to come.

We know that solutions exist and we are seeing economic signals on a daily basis that those solutions are both available and cost-efficient. However, we also know that the current set of Nationally Determined Contributions is wholly insufficient. Even if they are fully implemented, we would be on track to reach a temperature rise of at least 3 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures by 2100 – a recipe for catastrophe.

Our goal must be to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report, which recommends greenhouse gas reductions of 45 per cent below 2010 levels by 2030, and net zero emissions by 2050.
