(www.MaritimeCyprus.com) The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, in collaboration with Deloitte Cyprus, hosted the “BLUE ECONOMY” event, which was held at the Limassol Chamber of Commerce & Industry on 28 November 2022 with the participation of several business leaders and industry stakeholders. The event brought together high-profile speakers and esteemed panelists to discuss recent developments in the ESG front with a focus on the shipping industry.
During the event, Katerina Ronga (Principal, Risk Advisory, Deloitte Greece), Panayiotis Theodorou (Director, Assurance, Deloitte Cyprus), Thomas Tzavelakis (Senior Manager, Risk Advisory, Deloitte Greece) and Theodora Economides (Senior Manager, Risk Advisory, Deloitte Cyprus) elaborated on the sustainability journey of the shipping sector. During their presentations, some of the most pressing sustainability issues, opportunities and challenges affecting the shipping industry were presented, along with key shipping sector trends and proposed solutions on how a sustainability journey could look like.
Andreas Hadjipetrou (Managing Director of Columbia Shipmanagement Ltd and Chief Commercial Officer of the Group) and Philip Hadjisoteriou (Client Manager for Cyprus & Israel, Lloyd’s Register) discussed some of the practical problems of incorporating ESG in the strategy and operations of shipping companies, as well as the important role of the regulator, with Clea Evagorou (Partner, Risk Advisory Leader, Deloitte Cyprus) moderating this panel. The panel discussion facilitated the exchange of opinions and ideas on how companies can tackle sustainability challenges, take advantage of the opportunities and how to incorporate ESG in their organisation. Several attendees also took part in the conversation, by posing questions and exchanging ideas on different matters.
The event concluded with Zacharias Siokouros (CEO, Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute), presenting the Institute’s shipping research initiatives on the ESG front and how shipping companies can cooperate with CMMI on these projects as part of their ESG strategy and agendas.
