(www.MaritimeCyprus.com) Germany's Federal Bureau for Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) has released its Annual Report for 2023, shedding light on trends in marine casualties. The total number of notifications saw a notable year-on-year increase, rising from 659 in 2022 to 698 in 2023, representing a nearly 6% growth.
There were slight variations in the two primary categories. Marine casualties, as defined by the IMO Code, saw a substantial rise of over 10%, increasing from 120 to 134, while incidents experienced a modest decline, dropping from 294 to 273.
The overall increase in global reporting is largely attributed to the rise in Other Casualty Investigations (OCIs), which involve cases that do not fall under the BSU’s jurisdiction or do not qualify as accidents.
These OCIs grew from 237 to 291, with 20 notifications alone relating to vessels that could not be contacted via local radio channel 80. Meanwhile, the actual number of accidents remained nearly the same, with 407 in 2023 compared to 414 in the previous year.
