(www.MaritimeCyprus.com) The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) launches a new EU-funded project to apply Artificial Intelligence for maritime surveillance and marine conservation.

On Wednesday, 16 October 2024, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) organizes a public launch event for the EU-funded project AXOLOTL.

The project is financed for three years as part of Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation, and focuses on applying Artificial Intelligence (deep learning) to improve the monitoring of maritime traffic and of marine biodiversity.

The project will use a wealth of data from satellite imagery, underwater acoustics and underwater observation.

The project will leverage international collaboration through partnerships with reputable research institutions from France and Belgium to drive innovation and develop concrete solutions for the Mediterranean Sea. Indeed, the scientists from the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute will coordinate the project, develop advanced digital and environmental skills and network with teams from the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ, Belgium) and the University of South Brittany, France.

The project perfectly aligns with the Smart Specialization of Cyprus and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, as well the European approach to excellence and trust in Artificial Intelligence.

The launch event will feature a presentation of the project as well as a panel discussion. A reception will follow. Officials from Cyprus, France and Belgium will attend.
