The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) is inviting applications for the Civil Engineer Scientist Position at the Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture Centre (MBAC), located in Cyprus. This position aims to recruit a qualified individual, and only one successful applicant will be hired. The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and business needs. The position currently offers part-time employment, but there is potential for it to transition into full-time employment.

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute:

CMMI is a non-profit research, innovation, and technology development organisation established in Cyprus. It is supported by EU funds through the Teaming program, along with the Government of Cyprus and established industry stakeholders. CMMI brings together expertise from local universities, industry, and international partners.

Areas of Interest at MBAC:

MBAC focuses on various areas of interest, including marine aquaculture, marine biotechnology, and novel methods for monitoring the marine environment. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to leverage CMMI’s vast network and industry and academia links, including collaborations with international Advanced Partners such as the University of Southampton’s SMMI, the Marine Institute (Ireland), and Bluewise Marine (Ireland).

Candidate profile:

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates in the field of civil engineering willing to engage in activities related to the experimental investigation of cementitious composites and re-cycling waste material for the development of greener cementitious mixes suitable for additive manufacturing.

Job description:

Based on their expertise and level of position, successful candidates will contribute to various CMMI projects, educational and training activities. Successful candidates will be responsible for developing a fibre-reinforced cementitious mix design suitable for marine applications using additive manufacturing. The tasks will include among others: performing small-scale experiments (tension, compression, flexure etc) for the characterization of the rheological and mechanical properties of the developed cementitious composites, supervision during the implementation of additive manufacturing methodologies, and reporting of the testing procedures and results.

Candidates will have the chance to build upon their existing research track record and receive support in developing new skills and interests that align with CMMI’s projects. They will have the opportunity to explore diverse topics and contribute to the growth of CMMI, a young and vibrant organisation.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in civil engineering or a closely related field
  • Former experience in laboratory experiments for the mechanical characterization of fibre-reinforced cementitious composites
  • Preparation of scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience in the use of waste materials
