Cyprus hosts discussion on sustainable shipping and performance optimisation

( Cyprus is a vibrant and large ship-owning nation with an expanding maritime community and a government that is making plans to boost its shipping sector. One year ago, Cyprus appointed its first dedicated deputy minister of shipping to the president, Ms Natasa Pilides, driving the growth and sustainability of Cyprus’ shipping sector. Next week, Ms Pilides will give the keynote presentation at Digital Ship’s Vessel Performance Optimisation forum in Limassol, Cyprus.

The forum will bring together a variety of shipping industry members to discuss the best way to monitor, manage, and optimise performance and safety of maritime vessels. The day will examine how digital technologies can be used to improve fuel efficiency and deliver more sustainable and cleaner shipping and will look at the progress being made to ensure safe and cyber-secure operations.

As well as an introduction from the minister on how Cyprus is supporting maritime growth and generating business opportunities for those who ship or register under the Cyprus Flag, the forum will feature a talk from Pankaj Sharma, Columbia Control Room manager, Columbia Shipmangement on vessel safety, crew training and using modern technology to deal with fast-changing scenarios. Captain Eugen Adami, managing director, Mastermind Shipmanagement will discuss routes to performance optimisation, Dr Oleg Kalinin, fleet director, Sovcomflot, will talk about the transition to LNG as a marine fuel and his experiences with the Sovcomflot fleet.

We will also hear from Gina Panayiotou, head of shipping (global), Michael Kyprianou & Co. LLC on IMO 2020 and Adonis Violaris, marketing director, Interorient Ship Management and chairman, Cyprus Shipping Chamber ICT Subcommittee on how Cyprus is facilitating best ship management practises.

The forum will also offer some technical talks, including a presentation by Hans Paul of VAF Instruments who will discuss how to optimise propeller performance. “30 - 40 per cent of the loss in performance is caused by the propeller; quite a percentage for such a small part of the ship,” Paul explains. He will talk about how fuel consumption can be reduced by improving propeller performance and how maintenance is a vital but often under looked part of optimising fuel consumption.

In addition, we will also hear talks covering cybersecurity, safety, ship design and fleet performance analysis from:

  • Xanthos Neophytou, sales infrastructure manager, OSM Maritime Group
  • Giampiero Soncini, CEO, IB Marine
  • Warren Gibbs, head of information technology / leading global operations and advisory services, Uniteam Global Business Services
  • Michela Schenone, fleet performance specialist, RINA
  • Martin Buhl, VP, maritime sales, KNL Networks
  • Mike Konstantinidis, co-founder and CEO, Metis Cyberspace Technology
  • Marina Hadjisoteriou, partner, Michael Kyprianou & Co. LLC
  • George Venianakis, director, Global Network Operations, MSS Services, Speedcast

The forum is free to attend for all ship owners, operators, managers and builders and is aimed at anyone interested in learning more about applying digital technology to improve performance analysis and operate more fuel efficiently.
